Miracle, the True Story of the Wreck of the Sea Venture
won the 2007 Beacon of Freedom Award. Young readers (students in
Williamsburg, Virginia) select the winner. This award is sponsored by
Colonial Williamsburg and the Williamsburg Library.
At the awards ceremony, a student at Williamsburg’s Rawls Byrd School presented my plaque. Some of the judges brought a sign to welcome me. Special thanks to Darby Creek Publishing for sponsoring my trip to Williamsburg to collect the award in person.
In the third photo, I’m in Bermuda in front of the replica of the Sea Venture, with my two daughters. My research trip to Bermuda was made possible by a Work-in-Progress Grant from the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.
