Tsunami, the True Story of an April Fool’s Day Disaster
was selected by the National Council of the Social Studies and the Children’s Book Council as a 2007 Notable Book !

The “Tsunami in the Schoolyard” prompted American scientists to create a tsunami warning system for the Pacific basin. But a warning system is only effective if the public understands what to do.

This is true for all types of disasters – not just tsunamis. What types of disasters might occur in your area? Tsunamis? Hurricanes? Tornadoes? Floods? Earthquakes? Volcanic Eruptions? Fires? Blizzards? Avalanches?

Contact the local Red Cross.

_After researching the types of disasters that are most likely to affect your area, find out what the public needs to know about these impending disasters:
- How will the warning be sounded: siren? phone notification? media?
- How should people respond to the warning: evacuate? take shelter in basement? exit building?

Students should work in groups/partners to publicize this information. Each group might create one or more of the following projects:
- poster
- radio spot
- TV spot
- pamphlet
- feature article for newspaper/magazine
